The number one question to ask yourself, before starting your interior design project.

There is such an overload of beautiful imagery in our world today, Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook, design magazines, the list goes on. It can be very overwhelming when kicking off a renovation as to which design style will suit your space. People often get confused along the way, the end result being a disjointed space which doesn’t flow and rooms that do not work well together.

For this reason, it is so important that the first step of any renovation is to ask yourself one question……. How do I want my space to feel? Not how do I want it to look? what style should I go for? or which Sofa should I buy? ……….

The absolute number one question, how do I want my space to feel?

Any designer will ask you this first up in the design process……. Why?

Because good design creates an experience that you don’t even realise has been orchestrated. A well design space doesn’t feel designed, you don’t want to live in a display home. It should feel calming, cocooning, safe, relaxing, moody……. or whichever emotion you want to evoke as you walk through the door. We all want the ah, I’m home sign as we arrive home each day. This comes with a collaboration of design elements and principles which guide the brain through an experience, without you even knowing it.

With the chaos of the world in 2020, a world we have come to know as a place where children play their reinvented version of tag, whoever is ‘it’ is Covid-19 , and we are here, all profusely washing our hands and stocking up on toilet paper……… who would have thought that an existential crisis would have lead to panic buying of toilet paper of all the things?

In most of our lifetimes, there has never been a more important time than now to start creating our own sanctuary’s at home. So ask yourself……… How do I want my space to feel?

Next comes the imagery, spend at least a week or two creating an array of imagery. Just throw any imagery in there that appeals to you. Once you have a solid collection, use some of them to create a mood board or inspiration board. What works together? what doesn’t work? does the imagery lead to the feeling you wanted to evoke? This process can take some time, allow yourself this time because it is such an important step.

Just like that, you’re ready to start your spatial planning and design process. The perfect time to have your designer come on board. Or if you are wanting to mainly undertake the process yourself, then investing in a design guidance consultation for initial ideas and guidance on spatial planning from the beginning, is a process well worth investing in. As it can save you so much money in the long run.
